ISO LOADING DOCKS

When planning and designing warehouses, effective insulation is getting more and more important. Companies try to use insulated materials and to avoid cold bridges. Complete buildings are often carefully checked for air infiltration and energy saving opportunities. But who is concerned about insulation of dock levellers? Sectional doors for loading docks are well insulated plus assure temperature separation. Collapsible dock shelters are often regarded as standard equipment for sealing vehicles at the loading dock, but a wide range of alternative products is available to increase the sealing effectiveness.

There are still some weak areas at the loading dock that could easily be improved, for example air infiltration through the opening between dock leveller platform/concrete pit and cold/heat conduction through the deck plate of the dock leveller. ISO loading docks offer high insulation capacity for refrigerated and freezer loading dock applications.

Model CIVS-S 1700

The dock leveller is situated behind the sectional door and inside the warehouse. The sectional door will close over full width in front of the dock leveller onto the external yard. This design ensures that the front edge of the dock leveller will not function as a cold bridge. Optimum temperature separation and insulation is achieved.

This solution requires a larger sectional door as well as a hydraulic dock leveller with a telescopic lip extension of 1000 mm. A cut out in the concrete floor has to be made to allow the sectional door to travel in front of the dock leveller and to close onto the external yard. After the sectional door is opened, the tailgate of the vehicle can be stored underneath the dock leveller.

ISO Loading Dock
Model CIVS-S 1800

The sectional door is fitted with a reduced width bottom panel and will close in front of the dock leveller onto an insulated ISO panel underneath the dock leveller. The dock leveller is situated behind the sectional door and inside the warehouse. This design does not require a cut out in the concrete floor to allow the sectional door to travel in front of the dock leveller.

This solution requires a sectional door with reduced with bottom panel as well as a hydraulic dock leveller with a telescopic lip extension of 1000 mm. The front edge of the dock leveller will not function as a cold bridge. Optimum temperature separation and insulation is achieved. The tailgate of the vehicle can be stored underneath the dock leveller while approaching the loading dock.

Loading Dock with IGLU Insulated Dock Leveller Model IGLU 1600

The insulated IGLU dock levellers are an economically interesting alternative for heated warehouses. The opening between dock leveller platform/concrete pit will be closed by brush weatherseals and an additional ISO rubber seal. The platform will be insulated by fitting ISO panels underneath the structural beams. The triangular front beam of the dock leveller platform is insulated with Styrodur foam. The IGLU design does not require any modifications to the standard concrete pit which has a positive effect on the required investment.

Insulated IGLU dock levellers are not recommended for refrigerated applications as the front edge of the dock leveller overlaps the sectional door on the outer side. The outer front edge of the dock leveller will be subject to intensive sun exposure. The heat will be conducted through the deck plate and will act like a heater plate inside the warehouse. Temperatures of up to 50°C have been measured in summertime.

Styrodur Insulated Dock Leveller
Model CHVB-S 8000.XX.80

In case of standard loading docks with sectional doors closing onto the dock leveller platform, the complete dock leveller has to be regarded as a cold bridge. If, occasionally, specifications define an “insulated” dock leveller, the dock leveller platform will typically be insulated by means of Styrodur foam.

This material will normally be fitted between the structural beams on the lower side of the dock leveller platform. This is a low-cost option and the platform is insulated as a whole, but the structural beams will remain to conduct cold and heat into the warehouse as these are not insulated.
